1503.00-1503.01

It's that time again!

We skipped 1402.00 as there was a bunch of changes to be made and we couldn't fit it all into the shortest month, so instead 1503.00 is now released.

The first thing you'll probably notice in this release is the new HUD, we've abandoned the hotbar with its rows of icons above it in favour of a wieldring and icons which use much less screen space. The new wieldring also includes an inventory state icon, that changes when you're inventory is full, or nearly full; there's different states shown for "all slots used but some stacks still have space" and "all slots used and all stacks maxed". The new wieldring can take a bit of use to get the feel of, but give it a try, it's worth. If you really don't like it there's a checkbox in the settings menu to get the old hotbar back; but you'll then miss out on the incredibly useful inventory status icon, as well as any future HUD improvements.

Many new sounds have been added to this release, including environmental sounds; these are triggered by the server so everyone hears them, and include things like tnt boom, doors opening, teleport, pistons hissing as they extend, and wolves growling when you punch them. There's also new sounds for digging and placing water, and some local sounds like changing your wield item, and opening a chest, book, furnace, or other form. Now that we can trigger events over the network, we can also potentially add things like cracks on blocks that other players are digging, as well as their digging particles; but that's not added yet.

Probably the biggest thing to change though was a near complete rewrite to the way inventory is sent over the network, as this was found to be the cause of the majority of lag people have been noticing. The results are massive, with an almost 40,000% reduction in network traffic when digging and placing, and around 2000% reduction when interacting with chests and other blocks that have an inventory. So hopefully lag is now significantly reduced, if not gone for good.

The issues with mob overspawning have also been dealt with, we hope. This problem was buried in large chunks of legacy code which have now been mostly rewritten, and while we think the issue's been fixed, we've thought that before. So fingers crossed.

In other changes, there's now a slider for volume control in the settings menu. Stairs have got a whole new look with more steps and a greatly optimised drawing routine. Books and Diaries now have their titles written on the front. Some stone tiles and wooden parquetry were added to pretty up your floors. We fixed grass not turning into mud when there's something solid on top of it. Menche did some awesome code cleanup, removed compiler warnings, and just generally made the codebase more awesome. Some of the textures got a bit of an update. There's now translations for Brazillian Portuguese and Lojban. You'll now get a popup notice if you timeout on a server. The shape of flowerpots got prettied up a bit. Movement of dropped items was sped up and smoothed out a bit. Saplings will now auto-plant when dropped on grass or mud.

On the subject of dropped items, you should start seeing little parcels turning up around the place; this was added to clean up the mess a bit. When dropped items touch the ground they are now added to the nearest parcel, or become a parcel if there isn't one close. If you throw them into lava though, they'll be destroyed. You can right click on a parcel to see what's in it, and dig it to get all its contents.

As usual the new release is available from the download page.
The Mac build is also now available.

1503.01 has just been released, it fixes a bug with tool wear not being sent to the client.
Downloads for it are now available.

I no longer feel torn between two worlds
I already have my own world
It is one that I expand and where there are no limits
From what I can do, what I can try. (Sem Limites - O anoitecer das estações)
