The Future

A general idea of what I imagine for the future of Voxelands:

General:

  • Add a server map to the game's http server (like what the old minetestmapper.py creates, but dynamically generated)

  • Add some NPC's, with tutorial and quests

  • Add achievements, initially per-server, but eventually tie in with the api below

  • HD graphics mode, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWTsPQgd4ts for initial experiments - standard mode should still continue to work though

  • Add more RPG elements, beyond just sandbox builder

  • Character classes and factions

    • requires character data to be separated from player data so that a player can play multiple characters

    • stats, xp and skill levels

  • interactive NPC's, not just reactive mobs

    • Tutor - has info on controls, game-play, gives new players (reverse?) craft guide, has some tutorial quests

    • Inn Keeper - trades food and healing, rents beds for skipping night

    • Trader - trades materials and clothes (basic goods) in return for goods and quests, quests used to refill trader stock

    • Smiths - trades tools and tech (non-basic goods) in return for goods and quests, quests used to refill trader stock

  • Magic system

    • replace mese with raw mithril

    • raw mithril still works like current mese, but full set of tools, and a weaker pick (better than steel still)

    • smelting mithril makes unbound mithril - full set of tools, better than raw mithril

    • unbound mithril can be enchanted in a forge - variety of enchantments, limited to one per ingot

      • less wear

      • faster digging

      • more minerals

      • something that doesn't break things, so give a clay block instead of 4 clay lumps

    • tools can be crafted with differently enchanted mithril to gain different effects, 2 or more of the same effect increases the effect

    • should also be enchantments for mithril armour

3 game modes: creative, adventure, survival
Creative (Fully Implemented):

  • An infinite inventory and a 'creative chest' from which all blocks and items can be taken

  • No player damage

  • No tool wear

  • No crafting or smelting - everything is available from either inventory or the creative chest

  • Only 'passive' Creatures

Adventure (Fully Implemented):

  • Full crafting and smelting - have to mine/farm/craft to get the blocks and items

  • 'passive' and 'aggressive' Creatures - can be hunted for food/crafting supplies

  • Player damage and tool wear is on

Survival (Partially Implemented):

  • Like Adventure mode, but:

  • 'destructive' Creatures that damage buildings and player

  • Hunger  - player needs to eat to stay healthy

  • Suffocation/Drowning - limited air supply when under water or inside a node

  • Possibly some natural disasters - fire, earthquake, maybe tornado?

Create api.voxelands.com:

  • Servers will announce themselves when starting up (unless private mode enabled)

  • API will query servers at a regular interval using the HTTP API

  • A server list can then be created

  • Players can then use the api to find what server someone is on, or were last on

  • Add player auth so servers can (optionally) link with a global player account

  • Linked servers can then share achievements with the site, so players can track them easier and brag about them, etc

  • ???

And then once that's working, add an irc bot that interacts with the api.
Maybe at some point add irc <-> game chat
Also possibility of chat across servers?

Open to other ideas/suggestions as well smile

Suggestions:

In adventure and/or survival mode, decrease inventory size and add attachable inventories (like baskets or bags or backpacks).

Add corpses to survival mode, but not adventure mode.
Corpse is just a chest with a different texture.
Once you die, you gotta find your old corpse before someone else does.

Add PvP mode.
Like adventure or survival with no hostile mobs and some weapons.
Once you're dead, you get kicked from the server?
Then only people who actually want to fight will join servers and fight.

Add map on server status page (then maybe a map item).

Small inventory: /me expected that.
Corpse in survival: o.0 Hmm... Thought the answer would be a no (*bones*)

A hardcore survival isn't something I'd play anyway, so corpse/bones in that is a possibility.

Still no to pvp though tongue

oh and about survival mode:i thing DM must have lighting eyes (in dark you can see only eyes)

A little update:

All three game modes now exist, and everything listed for the creative and adventure game modes is now implemented (as of 1408:next/1409). Though some more creatures would be good, but that'll come when I rewrite the mob/creature code, hopefully for 1410. Survival mode is missing the natural disasters, and there aren't really any destructive creatures due to the bugs with Dungeon Masters.

Update 2:
Dungeon Masters have been reimplemented - as has every other creature. So that only leaves the natural disaster idea left for survival mode.
